Firstly - we wanted to say a HUGE thank you for all the power of the paws and prayers for the Mom. A big special thank you to Dawn for helping keep everyone informed.
For the last 3 years Mom has had multiple surgeries to try and repair her stomach. She only has skin and no muscles over her intestines and runs the risk that the skin could tear and her intestines could come out. They have been trying to use special mesh to try and strengthen the skin but each time she develops an infection and they end up having to remove it again. Sadly the same thing happened again this time. This is either the sixth or seventh time now - Mom has lost track. They removed the mesh and drained the abscess last week and left the wound open so it could drain and then on Tuesday her surgeon was able to close the wound. It is a big wound with many stitches and staples. Mom was also on IV antibiotics the whole week and needed two blood transfusions. I told her she should eat some nice raw steaks but she didn't seem to like that idea. Anyway, Mom came home last night and now we just have to keep our paws crossed there is no more infections and she can heal again.
Of coarse I am being the perfect nurse. I make sure Mom gets a little exercise by getting up to give me a cookie every hour on the hour and I bark at imaginary monsters so she has to get up and see what I am barking at - keeping her moving is very important. I stay just a few inches out of reach so she has to stretch to pat my head. Dweeb is hanging around somewhere in the background - he isn't much into this whole nursing thing and just between you and me - it took him a whole day just to remember who Mom was!!!!!!!!! Mom is sleeping a lot at the moment so I will try and get around and visit everyone while she naps. Thank you again to everyone for the good vibes.

We're hoping every day is a lot better than the day before! You keep a good eye on your Mom Reilly! You are the perfect nurse-dog! :) I'm sure the Dweeb will come around soon. Mom probably just doesn't smell quite like Mom yet.
ReplyDeleteOh Reilly & Denny - we feel so awful that we haven't been round to visit for ages and only just realised about your Mom after we saw your comment today!! The last time we visited, she had just had the mesh fitted but it was itching her a lot - we're so behind! - but we're really glad to hear that she had successful surgery to remove the mesh and really hope that she makes a quick recovery now. Oh, what a terrible time she's had lately - she's really been in the wars! And I can't believe she still found the time to come & visit my blog - we feel very honoured and also very ashamed that we're only returning the visit now.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm sending lots of belated healing slobbers and we'll keep your Mom in our thoughts!
Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane (& good wishes from Hsin-Yi too)

Keeping moving however possible is always important and it sounds like you've got just the right strategy to get mom to push herself a little without overdoing it. I hope she continues to improve.
