Snake!

The Mom let us out for our morning constitutional and as she opened the door to let us back in she noticed something moving in the grass just 2 feet to our right and as she watched she realized it was a snake! It was only about a foot and a half long - black with a yellow stripe and Mom is pretty sure it was a the common garden garter snake (non poisonous). Mom didn't have the camera at hand but found this picture on Google images. We being the EVER watchful watch dogs we are didn't even see it :) It always makes Mom laugh as the first thing people she meets talk about when she says she is Australian is "ALL" the snakes in Australia. In Mom's 40 something years of living in Australia (and Mom lived in the Australian outback) she saw 2 snakes and yet since living in the USA she has seen so many she has lost count. We had a big downpour last night and we think the cooler temps and moisture probably bought Mr Snakey out. Thankfully it slithered off under the neighbors fence within seconds of Mom seeing it - but she says she will be even more vigilant than ever as the other thing we have noticed the last few days is lots and lots of baby lizards (like an inch long) they are so cute but are also the perfect snack for snakes.
Snake - what snake - we didn't see anything Mom!

  1. Oh yes...the ever vigilant sheltie. Katie never notices the snakes at the park either. Good thing our dogs have us to watch out for them!

  7. Thunder Dunder was our resident snake hunter. He seemed to find them a lot and had fun tossing them around the yard until Mom came along and tossed that snake over the fence:)

We keep trying to snag one of those little lizards we see along our walks, but they are SO fast.

  8. I am always afraid of finding a snake in the yard. The boys seem to know instinctively when one is out there. It is why I could neve live by the lake.

  10. Yes. Great pic of you two boys! I have been to rattlesnake aversion class so I don't stick my big curioous nose in a snake's face! Now I even pause when I see a stick on the trail, which is fine with mom!!

  13. OMD you are lucky it wasn't a Rattleing Snake or a Chopper Head... or an ANACONDA... A snake by any other name is just as slithery. RIGHT?

  14. OMD, we are glad we don't live in a place where there are any snakes.

  15. Okay, I think you need to change your story to this, It's not that y'all didn't see the snake but you noticed it was non-poisonous therefore there was no need to sound the alarms. Yeah, that sounds much better than you almost let mom get snake bit. BOL

    Aroo to you,

  19. We just occasionally see snakes in Scotland - in fact we thought we saw a baby adder on Sunday, but it slithered across the path too quickly for us to be sure. Adders are the UK's only poisonous snake, and Gail is a bit of a scaredy cat about them.

  20. SHE remembers all the snakes SHE saw as a kid in Virginia. There were a few that were put in pockets for the day as pets. Now, SHE's like ALL Australian when SHE sees anything resembling a snake.

Hope those little lizard don't end up as snake snacks...

  26. Our Florida associate Miss Charlee says sometimes there are huge snakes coming out of the nearby Everglades. Fortunately she hasn't seen any of those. But the smaller ones visit her yard all the time. She also loves to see the little lizards. They move so fast, that if you don't know to look, you'd never see them.
