We are not sure what happened this year - our veggies plants all grew so well but we just didn't seem to get any veggies. Mom says it is a dieter's veggies garden - the kind you can't over eat from. Here is our one and only cantaloupe - it grew to this size in just a couple of days and has now stopped growing. Now of coarse our apples and blueberries did okay and we did get some nice cabbages - but literally overnight the bugs ate right through them so we only got to try one.
Next we have MY strawberries - we have plants growing everywhere and this is our crop - 4 strawberries! That is not going to make the strawberry shortcake Dad loves so much! And our green beans - there is 2 of them - how darn sad is that!
Lastly - MY beefsteak tomato - we had one HUGE tomato on it back in May and then nothing until yesterday when picked all these little tiny tomatoes off the same plant - Mom is calling them lilliputian beefsteak tomatoes. Now before you asked, yes the plants got lots of organic fertilizer (which we must say stinks wonderfully), water, sunshine etc - we can only think it was the cooler than normal summer that worked against us. Slim pickins indeed in our garden this year!
Hmmmm, that is strange. Its definitely been cooler. I bet thats the reason.
ReplyDeleteTell you Mom to take heart. She is a far more successful gardener than Gail....

Bertie.
It was a strange growing summer here. EVERYONE in the neighborhood did well with zucchinni. You can't give it to your neighbors. Cherry tomatoes did really well for us. We got a great early spring crop of asparagus in ways we've never seen before. However, everything else not so much. Tiny peppers, minimal lettuce and spinach.
ReplyDeleteOh no! What a shame! Everything looks so amazing that you did have my friends. Of course, if I lived closer you could blame the lack of strawberries on me cause I would snarf them down so fast! Snorts. XOXO - Bacon
ReplyDeleteWe had two tiny little pumpkins, good thing the store is close by.

That is how it is here - but typically from too much heat. I plant beefsteak tomatoes in hopes of getting cherry tomatoes.

we have the same problem, the plants look great and we have no fruits or veggies. we have 6 or 7 pears on the tree and we had not only one gooseberry. maybe it was just too wet and too dark during july and august?
ReplyDeleteYou weren't nibbling out there were you

It's a Bummer Crop instead of a Bumper Crop. So sad. I was so waiting to see all your veggies! Be sure to savor what you were able to pick.

I think the veggitables are confused. It's all hot, then cool, then hot then cool. And since they can't watch the weatherman, they has no ideas. At least you have some noms!!
ReplyDeleteWe are SooOOOOOOOoooooo sorry that your produce... didn't produce like it SHOULD have... We are sort of embarrassed about showing the stuffs we have had from our garden...
ReplyDeleteWe are STILL getting 87 bazillion green beans every few days... and tomatoes comin out our ... um EARS.
Maybe it isn't too late fur some of your thingys to STILL produce.
Did you get any of those Apple Cucumbers?? The ones you sent to us are growing and Bloomin and starting to show small cukes.
DARN Crazy Blogger must have eaten our furst comment.
ReplyDeleteSOOOOOOoooooooOOOOOooooo sorry that your garden has not produced like it should have.
Well BUMMMER.... this is our THIRD time trying to leave a comment... We think Squirrels are stealing YOUR pawduce... and OUR Comments.
ReplyDeleteSame thing here!!!! I thinks it's because our funky weather too. Our tomatoes did terribly, butts our peppers are goin' crazy right now!
ReplyDeletePaws crossed for next year...

Mommy tried planting pumpkin and cantaloupe this year. So far nothing on them. But maybe Mommy won't give up on them yet -- the picture you showed of your Cantalope said it grew in just a few days. Hope we got late bloomers in our garden.
ReplyDeleteYep, same here, Mom was not happy!
ReplyDeleteThe Mad Scots
I am sorry that kind of stinks. Mommy can't grow anything so we go to the farm stand a lot.

We had a bad year last year - nothing wanted to grow. This year started out slow but we finally have some cherry tomatoes (Hazel's favorite) and several yellow and spaghetti squash growing.

I'm so pleased that I don't know that Slim Pickins bloke.

Now one of the gardening shows was talking about that the other, but we can't remember what they said. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteDon't know how our garden will grow, Dui has been in it digging, so we may not even get to grow anything.
We don't do any gardening, so no idea on that. Around here things are really growing a lot it seems.
ReplyDeleteYour tomatoes look beautiful. Mom's are a bit lacking to say the least.

Heat would help for sure or a little fertilizer? Still looks like you got lots of goodies. Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteDo ya need some fertilizer? I got an endless supply over here, BOL BOL!
ReplyDeleteHow disappointing for you. Perhaps Frankie & Ernie could offer some wisdome...those two have green paws!
ReplyDeleteWally & Sammy
How disappointing not to have strawberries for shortcake! We gave up on trying to grow a ,but it sure would be nice to have fresh veggies. Do you plant a winter garden?
ReplyDeleteGoodness me guys beautiful but small crops..get mum to check the fertiliser ratio mayBe do a Ph on the soil...sometimes the ground gets an overload of fertiliser and what happens is the growing rate is so good that the fruiting is slowed down..so the plants are healthy and strong and a few things grow great but all the energy has gone in the wrong direction...I am sure your next crops will be bumpers :) hugs and loves Fozziemum ..pee ess if mum can get mushroom compost and use less liquid fertisliser it may help :) xx
ReplyDeleteHow strange! We hope the plants realize that they need to produce more before the first frost hits!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots♥
Mitch and Molly
Aw that's a shame.
ReplyDeleteWe were told once that if you use too much fertilizer the plants put their energy into growth and leaves instead of fruits (which many veggies actually are).
I dunno. We got lots of cherry tomatoes, and the bay tree and herbs are happy, but nothing else did too well here either.
Mmmm, it all looks delightful. We have had a good year too. Lot's of lovely produce, but we are not getting any thinner...BOL.
