Reilly was about 10 months old when we first started noticing him limping - it would last a couple of weeks and then disappear for months and month on end. Over the years since, he has had bouts of this limping. He has had his shoulder, elbow and foot x-rayed, he's had tendons checked and all sort of other tests but they have never found any reason for it.
Now Denny (who has just turned one) has - for the last few days he has been limping on exactly the same leg - at the moment it looks like they are twins because they are both limping. We are off to the vets tomorrow - but I am wondering - is it just a sheltie thing as I have noticed other writing about their shelties limping - or is Denny just wanting to be like his big brother and be copycatting Reilly's limp?
That sounds very worrying. I hope the vet can find out what is wrong with him...maybe check out his spine as well?
ReplyDeleteKatie has never limped for more than a moment, and that moment was usually when she stepped on something outside and sort of hopped funny. So I think you need that trip to the vet. Very strange!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard any of my friends, who show and breed shelties, mention this. If I were you, I would send an email to the Sheltie Club of America, or contact some local sheltie breeders, and see if they have any experience with this.
ReplyDeleteAre the two dogs related? I was just wondering if it could be a genetic problem in that family/line of shelties.
That would make us worried too. When I worked for a vet, I would hear them tell patients that sometimes the bones were growing too fast or something like that. They would often change the food they were on.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope your vet has some answers for you. We will be waiting to hear.

Oh no! We hope your vet figures out the limpie thing for you, Denny!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots,
Mitch and Molly
I thought I saw Denny limping in the video you posted but since you didnt comment on it , I didnt pay it much attention. I hope Denny is ok. Dogs can limp of all different reasons. No one cause, muscle injury. Which usually means rest with no running or jumping. I hope the vets can give you some answers.
ReplyDeletePriscilla has a good idea. Sometimes they limp, because they are compensating for pain elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteGood luck at the vet today. Keep us posted.
Oh no! We hope the limping goes away. I know I still have that extra toenail thingy - dewclaw or whatever it's called. Benji doesn't have it - his must have been removed right away after he was born. Sometimes when I play too hard -- I limp -- butt Mommy thinks I probably just pinched my dewclaw thingy. But I'm ok afterawhile. I hope your limping goes away. No fun when you are limping.
ReplyDeleteWeird. Hope Denny is ok!
ReplyDeleteHmm, a bit of a worry. Hope it clears up!
ReplyDeleteNever heard of Shelties limping for no reason. Tucker used to pop a shoulder or something and then would limp until I rubbed it. Doesn't happen now as he doesn't run much any more. A soft tissue injury might cause them to limp.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I hope everything is okay. I just wanted to pop by and let you know I received the seeds, but I hope you are getting to the bottom of this today. We're thinking about you!
ReplyDeleteJust saw this post--hope you are able to figure out what is wrong!
