One of the things we discovered on our trip down to Sanibel (which took about 7 hours of driving) was the rest stops were not at all pet friendly. They had beautiful picnic areas and were clean and well maintained but all the ones we stopped at had HUGE signs saying no dogs allowed except in the "approved" area which sadly were mostly just a four foot strip of weed infested overgrown area that was the "pet walk". We left on Friday morning and Mom wasn't actually feeling to well - in fact she slept nearly the whole way and slept all of Saturday too - not the greatest start to a vacation but Sunday morning she finally was able to get up the energy and head to the beach. It was quite windy and overcast and the water was a muddy and brown - not quite the wonderful aqua blue we were expecting but we still loved having a stroll along the beach and luckily it seemed we were about the only ones who felt like being out in the wind and the beach was all but deserted. The last couple of pictures show the bridge across to Sanibel and Fort Myers in the background - Mom thought is funny to see the big hotels over in Fort Myers looking like they were floating in the water.
Very interesting! Michigan rest stops are the same...no dogs in picnic areas. :(
ReplyDeleteoh it really looks like built on the water! great photo! it's sad when you have to deal with bad doggie-areas when you are on the road... we totally agree... it's sh*t when your trip starts with stepping in poo and running through a jungle at rest stops... :o(
ReplyDeleteWe hope your Mom feels better soon. Isn't there a big tropical storm brewing out in the Ocean?
ReplyDeleteThose are amazing pictures!
ReplyDeleteOMD OMD OMD they DO look like they are Floating on the water. THAT is an amazing picture.
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely there. It is unfortunate that the rest stops were not pet-friendly. I hope that we don't run into that problem on our vacation. I'm glad that you felt better and was able to enjoy your trip.
ReplyDeleteWow, it does look like those hotels are floating!
ReplyDeleteWe hope your mom is feeling better!
Cammie!
Yep, we know those views well from when we had a house in Fort Myers and went to Sannibel. Fort Myers is really bad for dogs. We couldn't find any parks that allowed dogs.
ReplyDeleteThe hotels do look like they're floating in the water☺ What a bummer that they weren't more dog friendly.
ReplyDeleteOur 'leash free' areas are full of catheads and bindiis....why anyone thinks we want to walk on those is beyond us. Did your mum get lots of shells to transplant to YOUR beaches?
ReplyDeleteOh, they do look like they're floating! Yes, our mom knows those pet areas. They are in terrible shape, often with trash and broken glass!
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
We have run into the same problem at rest stops - sad that they do not maintain the pet areas
ReplyDeletehope you got feeling better

You two are beach bums for sure. You wouldn't know what to do without your beach. Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteThe photos are beautiful regardless of the weather! My Mom was last in Ft.Myers when she was about 10 (zillions of years ago!) They have sure built it up since then! DakotasDen
ReplyDeleteCrikey ..... those sure are pretty pictures. I've never seen floating hotels before. What a shame your Momma was sick. It's no fun being sick on holidays.
ReplyDeleteWow...those hotels are a little spooky looking!!

Oh, I forgot Sanibel is such a long drive for you. We always just find a grassy area at the rest stops for me to do my business...since we always scoop, it isn't really a problem. At the "pet areas" it seems no one scoops and it is gross.
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to see Reilly enjoying the outdoors but now knowing the after math we feel so sad. It looks like a beautiful trip once you were feeling better! Love Dolly
