Mom and I both LOVE apples - she is a bit fussy though - she likes them peeled and cut up but the bags you buy in the store cost so much so she searched around on Pintrest and found a quick and easy way to make her own.
This is so simple and keeps the apples from turning brown, makes them juicy and they stay crunchy ! What is our trick - simple. Peel and core your favorite apple, cut into quarters and then slice each quarter into 4 slices - pop them into a zip lock bag and pour in some soda (about a 1/3 cup). Give it a good shake so all the apple slices get coated and that is it ! Keep them in the refrigerator and enjoy when ever you want them - they last 4-5 days but in our house they never last more than a few hours :)
Now we couldn't just post any old thing about them so in an endeavor to make sure this is a best foodible delight ever we have been experimenting with types of apples - it was a tough job but someone had to do it right :) We found the ones we like the best are the Gala apples followed by Braeburn, Honey Crisp and Red Delicious. We have also been experimenting with the flavors of soda and our number one favorite is the Cream Soda. If you just want a plain apple flavor Sprite is the best. You can use any flavor soda though - they all work, grape, pineapple, orange, ginger ale or lemon lime. We haven't tried it with a Coke or Pepsi flavor as Mom doesn't like those.
So there you go - a nice healthy snack.......Come on Mom - I am sure it is time for another apple break and they do say "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" - actually according to the news last night - we need two apples a day - YUM :)
Looks totally yummy. Gail is an apple a day person, and I am an apple core a day dog! Our favourites are Cox's orange pippins.

ReplyDeleteHmm..that sounds like it might be worth a try. Does your mom make apple pies?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. Mama doesn't mind the skin, but she has to cut them to eat them. It would be great to be able to save them without them going brown.
ReplyDeleteWE love Apples TOO... Red or Yellow Delicious are the only kind our mom buys..
ReplyDeleteOMD this is marvelous... Mom has used both Fresh and Bottled LEMON JUICE to keep apples fresh in bags in the fridge... BUTT NEVER SODA (or POP as it is called around this neck of the woods).
We need to have mom try this one. She always just Peels a BIT of the skin off and then slices them fur us.. to share with Her..
THIS would be very much REFRESHING... and WE think the Cream Soda would be SUPER.
THANKS fur the TIP.... it would make a GRRRREAT SummerTime COOLER.
We never heard of that. We like peanut butter on our apples.
