As we mentioned earlier in the week - Mom has been feeling a bit homesick and when she gets in "one of these moods" she puts on her favorite Aussie music, watches Aussie movies and eats Aussie food. Now some of you may have heard about that delightful stuff called "Vegemite' which kind of tastes like an old car tire mixed with sticky hot tar off the road. Well Mom baked a nice fresh loaf of gluten free bread and headed off to the only store in town that carries Vegemite. It cost an arm and leg or to be more precise $12.95 ( a jar like this back in Australia would probably cost $3-4) but sometimes Mom says you just have to treat yourself. We waited eagerly to try this Aussie delight and what can we say - we must have Aussie taste buds because we LOVED it !!! PS - Vegemite actually has a kind of beef stock flavor and is high is vitamin B - if it made from brewers yeast.

Wow, the way you describe the taste makes me want to try it...NEVER. ;)
ReplyDeleteHmm...now mom says she has that song stuck in her head by Men at Work BOL!
ReplyDeleteI has no idea what Vegemite is...but the words vegie make me think BLECH! But is you like it, then I guess it must be okay?
I've had Vegemite before! When Auntie Denise and Uncle Bryan came to visit us from Australia, they brought us some. Mom thinks it taste like very salty beef bouillon.
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots
Mitch
We have heard of this before. Maybe your mom needs a little trip to visit the land she longs for? Has it been a long time?
ReplyDeleteYour pals,
Murphy & Stanley
I laughed so hard about your description of vegemite! Butt I understand your mom, we bought a bottle HP Brown Sauce for 6 euros.. and we drove 70 miles one way to eat fish&chips :o)
ReplyDeleteErnie has NOT EVER tasted Vegemite... butt I (FF) HAVE... it was actually BROUGHT From Australia to us by our furend in Manilla, NSW. I have to confess.... that I (FF) was NOT a fan...
ReplyDeleteBUTT Even at that high price... a LITTLE Vegemite goes a long way... and your MOM is surely WORTH it.
Glad that you boys are following in your mom's Paw Steps... and love all thingys AUSSIE... WE do ALSO... with the EXCEPTION of the VEGEMITE.
Oh my! That is Australian. My mom won't go near that stuff. It is all in what you are used to I guess.
ReplyDeleteWe love Vegemite. We get Vegemite gravy (a tiny bit melted in hot water) over our kibble sometimes! YUM! (SHE doesn't like it much, but pays exorbitant amounts to buy Fritos, Clam chowder and Snyders sourdough pretzels in Australia.)
ReplyDeleteif the dogs love it, it must be yummy!
ReplyDeleteCRIKEY .... $12.95!!!!!!!!! AND worth EVERY last cent I must say!! I knew you blokes had good taste. Spread it thick .... it's the only way. Leaves peanut butter for dead!!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, your Mom came the land down under. Maybe the vegemite stuck to the roof of your month because you were eating it in the land up over?
ReplyDeleteSherman

We have heard of Vegemite from others but have never tasted it. We get mixed reviews from those who have = guess it is one of those "either you love it or hate it" delights:)
ReplyDeleteGlad Mom was able to find something to make her feel better.
Woos - Phantom, Ciara, and Lightning

Momma says she's heard of Vegemite...but never with that sort of taste description before! She's not so sure about trying something like that for herself...I say bring it on! Especially if it tastes as delicious as you two make it look!
ReplyDeleteMom saw some Vegemite at our local supermarket the other day. She says she is more of a Bovril girl.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your taste of home Miss Bree.
Wally & Sammy
Howdy Mates. MMmmm, we LOVE Vegemite and would eat it every day if mum let us. Mum loves vegemite and cheese sandwiches! Glad you had some but sorry it was sooo expensive. Mum says a big jar costs around $6.00 these days but it's worth every cent haha. Take care. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory
ReplyDeleteP.s. Where in Adelaide did your mum live? xx
I can only say that you two will eat anything! It must be an acquired taste I suppose. I bet its good for sneaking pills in, hehehe. Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteOur Lady doesn't love the vegmite, she thought it was salty. However, when she could eat gluten, TimTams were a fav in our house. Enjoy your Australia day!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Beckett and Keltic would like vegemite but thier MUm surely doesn't. Amd I don't like marmite either. Guess it's an acquired taste.
ReplyDeleteWe've never had Vegemite, but our mom has. She said it was ok!
ReplyDeleteCammie!
