A visit to the Vet and a warning!

Mom being the 'panic person' she is had me off to the VETS today to have my eye checked out. It turns out to be a teeny tiny scratch on the cornea. More than likely 'self' inflicted due to my allergies and my recent scratching like crazy around my nose. He did a stain test on my eye - put some yucky yellow drops in it to see if was deep and is actually already healed so nothing at all to worry about. The best part is we got to go to the park afterwards! Scrunching in all the leaves is soooo much fun!

Now the Wuzster (Denny) - is a different story. After being subjected to the dreaded B.A.T.H this past weekend Mom put on our flea and tick treatment. The Denny started acting quite strangely, he couldn't settle down and his feet kept jumping - like he was trying to shake something of the bottom of his foot and he looked really "worried and stressed" The little guy just wasn't his weird normal self - he was even weirder! Mom thought he was just upset about them moving all the 'junk' from the sunroom into the spare room. Denny HATES change and will bark like crazy even if the broom is not it's usual spot!!! But then she remembered he had the same reaction when she put the flea treatment on once before - she thought then it was just because he wasn't use to it - it was his first time and it probably felt funny.

Mom asked the vet today about it and it turns out Denny was having a neurological reaction to a chemical in the flea treatment. He was on Certifect which is a new treatment from Frontline. - PLEASE NOTE : The original Frontline DOES NOT HAVE this chemical in it. He said certain dog breeds such as Shelties, Collies and Shepard's - can have these neurological reactions and it can vary from just twitches like Denny had - to actual seizures.

Mom in all her wisdom has decided to keep us both on just Frontline now as she KNOWS that doesn't bother us. Thankfully the VET says there will be no long term issues with Denny - it is just a temporary thing when dogs have a reaction. He still SCARED the heck out of Mom when she heard it though and poor Denny has had to suffer through many additional cuddles this morning and much 'poor baby' cooing. Yep! the name Wuzster suits him perfectly! Mom has also learned that we will ONLY see our 'regular' vet now - it was his partner that suggested the Certifect for Denny and we won't be seeing him again!

  1. Man Reilly! I'm glad your eye is OK, but what a scare for your mom, both you AND Denny! Will now worry about your Mom's surgery instead of about you guys...so you two stay good, ok?

  3. Now THAT is very interesting about Denny and the treatment. Phantom had always had a bad time with his Frontline to the point that Mom even contacted the company to see if there had been any reports of it causing seizures in dogs. It seemed very coincidental that he would have a seizure around the same time as his treatment. And if he didn't have a treatment he would get all scared and run and hide when Mom would put it on him. Mom thinks it may have had something to do with the smell that triggered him to be afraid. We stopped using Frontline when it became available everywhere. We now use Vectra, which seems to have no odor. He doesn't get all upset about it either. We hadn't heard about this new one you tried, but you know, you can never be too cautious.

We hope Denny will be OK and we are glad your eye is healing so well.

  4. Yes, I remember when Ludo was a baby our vet used a different flea treatment because collies are effected by something. (Mum)

Reilly, I is so happy that your eye is not bad. You must be careful with the scratching, maybe you should do lickings instead?

  5. Hi guys im glad to hear that everyone is ok. The same thing happened to Fred with his eye and we had to have the drops put in and use a black light and the drops made his eye glow neon :)

The seizure thing....Fred now has epilepsy so I am VERY careful what flea meds and heartworm meds that I use on him because you are right alot of those meds can cause neuro issues and since he already has epilepsy we have to be veryt careful.

Im glad that everyone is safe!

  6. That is sort of scary for sure. Who would have thought something we think is doing good for our fur-kids is actually causing worse problems. We use Frontline as well and I think we will stick with it. Sniffs, The HoundDogs

  7. We don't use flea and tick products. My guys only get HeartGuard for heart worm. I deal with ticks when we see them luckily we're not out in the long grass much.

Glad Denny is all right, he deserves some extra cuddles.

Hope your Mom's surgery goes well too. We'll be thinking of you all.

Glad everything was fine for you too Reilly.

  8. Yea, that flea/tick stuff is scary. I rarely use it, because so many of my dogs have had horrible reactions to it.

Glad your eye is gonna be OK.

  11. Glad your eye is ok Reilly - I had a cornea scratch once and it healed but I had to have medicine.

That is really scary about the new flea medicine that Denny had a bad reaction to. Thank you for the warning.

  12. Hey Reilly, glad your eye is OK and that you had fun at the park! That's really scary about Denny's reaction. I haven't heard about that new product, but we will definitely stick with the old Frontline just to be safe.

  15. So glad to hear that your eye is ok, we were so worried about it.

We use Frontline Combo for Eva and luckily she is alright with it. We didn't know that some dogs are allergic to Frontline.

Eva and Mika have the tick problems lately and we didn't know where they got them as they hardly go out. Luckily, everything is under controlled (paws crosssed)now.

We hope Denny is okay now!

Please take care of your mom as we know that her surgery is around the corner too!

  16. OOOH! Sorry about your eye trouble! Nala knows what it's like to have trouble with one of her eyes -- she had a scratch that turned into an ulcer! After 4 surgeries, it finally went away. So scary about Denny's reaction -- I hope he's OK!

    Woofs & hugs, <3

  22. Bowsers, we will keep that in mind. Probably even blog about it. We knew about collies reaction to ivermectin and imodium and will add this to our list.

  23. Our beagle had a terrible reaction, large, oozing sores on his back, not being treated with steriods and laser treatments. The husky only had one dose of certifect and was sick for days. I think this new product is very detrimental to a dog's health.
