The Beach Boys
Mom says one of the weird things about living at the beach is your suddenly develop a taste for beach music - like the Beach Boys. Now Mom has lived most her life near the beach so why it should suddenly just kick in is beyond us but needless to say on our trips to the beach there is inevitably a Beach Boys cd playing. Last weekend though Mom and Dad watched the movie "Love and Mercy" which is all about Brian Wilson's life - he was the lead song writer/singer for the Beach Boys and for many years he struggled with mental illness. It made Mom so sad to learn that many of his greatest songs were written through turmoil and pain in his life and for a couple of days she couldn't listen to their music anymore because of it. Gradually though she realized music - whether you listen to it or are able to write or perform it is a great source of comfort in one way or the other. It is a hard movie to watch and sadly makes you realize that often with genius comes a toll (ups and downs, depressions, drugs etc) - one that sadly many great artists have fallen victim too. We are happy to say though that Brian Wilson came through it and is still today performing and writing songs and we back to loving rocking out to their iconic tunes as we head to the beach. Mom of coarse says we are her most favorite Beach Boys :)

I'm so sorry that Brian Wilson had to go through all that hard things... no one would get the idea that the songs about fun and sun and good times are written while he was in pain.... as I heard about that the music was no longer the same for me... I still imagined a beach and an endless summer, but I also saw the man behind the music...

I have a playlist on my iPod for "beachy, upbeat, Latin" music. Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett are there of course. I'll watch for the movie about Brian Wilson, it sounds interesting. Have fun, Beach boys!

You two are great beach boys. It is sad that so many of the very talented entertainers in music, comedy , acting are also such troubled souls. Glad that Brian Wilson has fought through it.

I love the Beach Boys music. It is sad that Brian Wilson went through so much suffering, especially with someone that he trusted. Your video had me tapping my foot and singing along. ♥
ReplyDeleteMom loves the Beach Boys too, but we think you two are the most amazing beach boys!!!
ReplyDeleteMusic has amazing powers. Our Dad's younger sister has early onset Alzheimer's and is in a very bad spot. Dad was out to visit her last week, and he said the one thing he saw her enjoy was music videos. Her husband plays them for her, mostly from the 60s and 70s and she knows almost all the words and sings along with them. Powerful therapy.

OMD our mom and dad went to a Beach Boys Concert once... it was WONDERFUL... Brian Wilson touched SO MANY people with his songs....
ReplyDeleteYes yes! Was going to do a whole review of this movie (it's in my unpublished blog posts as we speak). Such happy music came from such a dark place. It truly made me appreciate an entire era of music, including the real birth of "pop" music.
ReplyDeleteJohn Cusack and Paul Dano were both brilliant. It will be criminal if this movie doesn't win awards!
We recently watched that same documentary! We got so angry at that doctor!

Music is a good healer. We love YOUR beach boys. We'd love to run in that sand!
ReplyDeleteMy mom is a big Beach Boys fan. She went to one of their concerts when she was in college. Living on the beach does put those songs in one's head!

ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to be able to go to the beach. Glad your Mom is feeling better.
