Shame shame shame!

We were stunned while watching TV news to hear that 11 police dogs have died after being left in hot cars over this summer (2015) - 9 of them while "on duty". These dogs on average cost around $40.000 to train and take up to a year to reach the point where they become official police dogs. To let them die in such a horrific way is unforgivable. We acknowledge that while a police officer might be busy attending a crime scene it can be easy to forget a dog in the car but some rules need to put in place to prevent this happening. These brave and amazing dogs risk their lives every day when out on patrol and will do anything to protect their handlers - it seems only right that their handlers should do everything possible to protect them as well. You can read more about this story here http://www.weather.com/safety/heat/news/police-dog-deaths-hot-car

In other good news though animal cruelty is now a felony is 50 States here in the USA although sadly many judges are not willing to impose penalties that will really deter further abuse :(

  1. That is very shameful! The province we live in is looking to totally re-write the animal cruelty laws (we have a problem with puppy mills) so we will see what comes from that!

I so admire ALL service dogs and to read of this is truly disturbing, given how we are so often reminded of how dogs can be affected by heat. (I adore the Austrian police show Kommisar Rex - find it on the tubular! - where the GSD is the star of the show.) Good that animal cruelty is now recognised... shame the shift in cultural attitude is lagging behind, but it is often thus... Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  4. I wonder if they need crates that they can be staged for them to stay in safely at crime scenes. It seems like a challenging situation where the dogs may be needed, but need a safe environment to wait while the police are working on the scene. In some situations the dogs require a secure place to wait as well, thus the sign on the car. Perhaps trailers with A/C's need to come to crime scenes where dogs are likely to need to wait for long periods of time. I've no knowledge of police procedures to come to an intelligent, workable solution but it is clear that this needs to be a priority. I'm sure that those in the field can come to find solutions that can provide workable accommodations.

  5. That is terrible. I recently saw a K9 officer with a tricked out car. If he is gone from the car too long and the temperature reaches a certain degree inside the car, the back door where his K9 partner stays automatically opens so his partner can get out. It was pretty cool!

  6. that shouldn't happen... so sad.... on the other hand, I don't understand why the car makers can't make a simple alarm if a car gets too hot when passengers are inside... or why we have no automatic ac... we have an automatic can cooler (who needs such a thing?) and so much useless stuff in our cars we never need, why we can't get things what can save a life?

  7. I'm so glad that we have safety precautions here in this county where I work for the K9 dogs. They are not just service dogs - they are family members with that officer. They live with them, interact with them, play with them, train with them, take them to the vet and work with them. They are their partner in this crime driven society. They are special dogs that can be so kind on one paw and so fierce with determination on the other paw. We've seen them work and they are awesome. Great posting my friend on these "partners". 8. What is wrong with people? It is so obvious that we cannot live in hot cars!

  9. We are SHOCKED to hear this... Sad and Sorry... We wonder where the Dispatcher was during a situation that took the officer away from the HOT car??? Surely the dispatcher KNEW there was a K-9 on duty... WHY did the dispatcher not call for an Auxiliary Officer to come Tend to the dogs... while the actual officers were doing WHATEVER they were doing... THIS is NOT to be tolerated... it is Shameful actually. There ARE things that CAN be worked out to PROTECT the K-9s from such situations..

  10. NO dog should ever die in this horrific manner. When it is a member of the law enforcement, it is unfathomable.

  13. That is terrible, on so many levels. Surely it is not so difficult to arrange for such precious animals to be cared for properly at all times. Shame indeed.

  14. That is just horrific - all the more so as the police are called out many times to break windows of cars when a member of the public reports a dog in distress inside. You would think they would know better. Disgraceful!

  15. It's truly a shame that dogs in service aren't protected more. I recently ran into a story where a bomb sniffing dog with a back injury was being released from duty without a plan as to where he was going to live. I'm glad animal cruelty is a felony in all 50 states. I guess it's a process of tiny steps.

  16. Oh dear, that is very sad and indeed shameful!!! There should be some sort of backup protocol for those police dogs that have to be left alone. That has to be a horrible way to die.

  17. You'd think that might be one of the first things the K-9 Corp might instill in the handlers! It's getting hot here, we're not allowed to go for rides in the middle of the day anymore......sigh...unless we're going somewhere that we're getting out on arrival.

  22. We saw a story on this a while ago when a Police dog died near here. The Police cars are suppose to be kept running with the AC on, and if there is a problem with the car, there is suppose to be an alert given to the officer through a pager or text alert to return to the car. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work, and these tragedies keep happening. There is suppose to be an upgrade to the cars that is going to take place soon, to put better safety measures in place. I sure hopes it works. This is just unacceptable.
