Yesterday the 'old fogies' ABANDONED us and went to downtown Jacksonville to have a look
around. Mom says she was a bit disappointed as she noticed A LOT of 'no dogs allowed' signs......of coarse we only have HER word about that seeing how we didn't get to go! Mom also said we wouldn't of liked the 93 degrees temps either as the overcast skies were helping to keep the humidity high.
Anyhoo - they went to an area called Jacksonville Landing which in its time was probably a really cool place. Designed in a half circle it has two levels and over looks the St Johns river. In the middle there is a stage area where they have concerts. Sadly there are just a lot of empty stores there now and the only thing that really keep it going is the restaurants as it is surrounded by big office buildings. One thing Mom really liked though was the "Riverwalk' - it is a path that goes all along the St Johns River edge and they have set it up so that anyone with a boat can just pull up next to it for free and go off exploring. Sadly there isn't any free car parking though. There is also a water taxi that you can catch and it takes you for tours along the river or to certain places you might want to go. And finally - there are bridges - six of them in just this one small area and each one is painted a different color - Mom thought that was neat as she can remember colors better than names :)

ReplyDeleteRiver and bridges are always attractive; city centres, sadly, are often not what they're cracked up to be... sounds like you boys were just as well off staying and guarding the house! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
This kind of reminds us of our Nati City. We have shuttle pontoons that you can take across the Ohio when we are having baseball game or events in town. We are getting a Navy ship named for Cincinnati, you talk about the base close by and I though that would interest you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a friend

Love the pictures!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice just to get out and visit somewhere new. 94+ degrees are not good for shelties or any other breed of dog. Your mom was wise to leave you at home in comfort.
ReplyDeleteWe don't think you would have liked all that heat either. But a ride on that water taxi sounds like it would be fun. Are dogs allowed on them?

Neat looking bridges! Too bad you had to stay home but sounds like it was for the best!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty. Mom likes that place called Florida

We have been toJacksonville for a cheerleading competition a number of years ago when I was coaching. It is a lovely city. The colored bridges is great idea!
ReplyDeleteThat really stinks you couldn't go! But I agree with your mom about the heat so maybe in the winter you can do the riverwalk. But watch out for those drawbridges, we have them here, they move when you walk across them. You can't say you haven't been warned. Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteWe have a bridge near us named the 'thaddeus kosciuszko' bridge, say that three times fast (or try to pronounce it once correctly)! My dad likes the name because its named after a Polish man and my dad is 100% Polish.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of us just call it the "twin bridges" or the "twins". Keep it simple! I like the colors names.
Looks like a nice outing for the humans!
Thanks for the pictures. It seems all cities have their good and bad points.
ReplyDeleteThat all looks very interesting. I'm sure you guys would have enjoyed the tour but not the heat. Your mom was right, better you stayed in the nice air conditioned house this time. She'll take you back out to the beach soon if you behave yourselves. (No running away back to the car Mr. R!)
ReplyDeleteWe had 93 and humid here, too! I didn't get to walk until 5:30!! Butt I did get to swim. I know you guys don't like that, butt it's cool :-)

Looks like a nice place. We go to Fort Myers and there are no dogs signs everywhere.
ReplyDeleteWe don't know much about Jacksonville but that blue draw bridge is really pretty and the water taxi looks great! I do have that kind of weather all year long though :(
ReplyDeleteSo very cool! Mom/dad are still trying to come up with a date for an excursion. They talked to my Uncle Mike the other day about it... of course with a side trip planned if you know what I mean - snorts and winks. XOXO - Bacon
ReplyDeleteIt was great to see YOUR town :o) Will they name it Dennyville now or Reillyville? or maybe they will change the name efurry week, so both names are included? We have a lot of such signs here too, that's awful when we drive an hour to the beach and suddenly there is a new sign that says we aren't allowed :o(
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful bridges!! We aren't sure about them going with out you, but it looks like they saw lots of cool stuff!
ReplyDeleteSmileys!
