Musing On Monday #4

Hunting Dogs in Trucks - The other day when we were driving Mom and I counted 5 open backed trucks that had dogs in them untethered. We were horrified when we stopped at the traffic light to see a truck in front of us with a yellow lab in the back suddenly take off quickly when the light changed -  the dog in the back which was STOOD on the left hand side - untethered -  slid quickly to the right and almost out of the truck. There were two lanes turning so if the dog had slid out - he would of been under the wheels of the car next to the truck and would of been killed or severely injured.   Sadly we live in an area that is hunting crazy - and this is a very common sight but what I do not understand is WHY these owners do not take the simple precaution of tethering their dogs. I heard from our local vet the other day that the hunters in our area spend thousands of dollars on their hunting dogs - so it seems even crazier to put such an a prized pupster at risk. Whether they are worth thousand or not  - EVERY dog deserves to be looked after properly and this is not proper at all! It is time this practice was made illegal for it is not only putting us pupsters at risk but also the hoomans who have to swerve or slam their brakes on to avoid missing a dog that has fallen from a truck. The only thing I can say to these irresponsible hoomans is BAD hooman - BAD hooman !!!!!!

  2. That's the point that always has surprised me. These dogs are prized for their hunting abilities. It takes time to train them, one would think losing one would be a financial if not an emotional loss.

  3. We used to see that alot, but more and more are seeing them in big crates, or the front seat....change is slow but maybe the owners are thinking more about their furkids better...we also have LOTS of hunting around here!

  4. I remember when my sister and I used to ride in the back of my dad's truck. Lots of things have changed over the years!

  5. Bad indeed. I have never ridden in the back of a truck. But Pete, MOM's heart dog, he would ride in the back of MOM's truck. BUTT she did have him tethered to the bed of the truck. And she made sure that the tether did not extend to long so he could only go to almost the side of the truck. A tether does not good if the dog can still go over the side.

  6. I totally agree my friends!! :-( Boo to those bad humans and their ignorant selves!! I say all pups/kittens deserve to be safe when they travel and safe does not constitute as being un-tethered in the back of a truck!

  8. I'm pretty sure that it is illegal in some states. I'm sure other states will follow eventually.

I remember when I was a kid, and we used to ride in the back of a van or station wagon ~ bouncing around! People wouldn't think of letting kids sit loose in a car these days. Should be the same for dogs.

  9. I couldn't agree with you more. Heaps of dogs on utes here too, if you remember and many [most?] not secured. I believe the law requires owners to secure the dogs, but like texting on mobile phones while driving, no one really cares to pull them over.

We are guilty of not always harnessing Georgia in the car because she makes such a fuss, cries, gets tangled, and has chewed through 2 barriers and 2 harnesses. But, if I'm not mistaken, it's the law to secure them in the car as well.

There you go. We're bad hoomans too :(

  10. We don't see that kind of stuff where we live but we agree - pets are precious and they should be inside the cab with their hoomans!

    Love ya lots,
