An update on mom

Mom is still in the hospital. What they are thinking has happened is scar tissue from a previous bowel resection is causing a small blockage. It is like a small flap of scar tissues and when it gets inflamed blocks the bowel.  To fix it would require about a five hour surgery most of would be just trying to find the blockage and then trying to fix it which in itself is a risk.  Mom doesn't want to do that unless there is no other option so what they have recommended is she goes on a "mashed potato diet"  - this doesn't mean just mashed potatoes but foods of a mashed potato consistency and no fibrous foods that are hard to digest like certain meats, beans fruits and veggies etc and no doughy bread or food that turn into lumps in the stomach.  They are hoping if they give her bowels a chance to calm down again and become less inflamed that the obstruction won't be such a problem. Mom wanted to say thank you for all the support and kind words....she really appreciates every single one as they make her feel less alone as she and dad cope with this.

  2. Oh Mom, feel betters! Does that mean you can have all kinds of yummy smoothies, or would that be too fibery? Milkshakes?

  3. Mashed Potato is my (Lassie's) FAVORITE food in the whole wide world! Don't tell the vet, butt if there is a plate of tablescraps, I prefer Mashed Potatoes over anykind of meat.

Maybe I will ask Mommy if she will only feed me mashed potatoes instead of dog food (I would only be eating the mashed potatoes to cheer you on, it's not for the fact that I love mashed potatoes.) Hmmm, I wonder if Mommy will go fur that?

All kidding aside, we hope the mashed potato diet works -- we would hate fur you to have to go thru another surgery.

  11. Thank you for the update. I learned that scar tissue from earlier operations can cause many problems after a friend had abdominal surgery and subsequently things did not clear up as she'd hoped. So we're crossing all fingers and paws that the 'mashed potato' diet calms things down and the system gets back to something close to normal soon.
    Very best wishes,
    Gail.
Ps Bertie sends friendly 'get well' licks. He's sure they help!
