Musing on Monday # 20

Many of you know that our Mom is an Aussie (from Australia) even though she lives here in the USA now. Many of you may also know that Australia is famous for having the deadliest snakes in the world and if you watch the wild life shows - it makes it seem like they everywhere in Australia. Well our Mom lived most of her life in South Australia's mid north - which is pretty much the desert and prime snake area according to the TV shows - the problem is - in all her years of living there and roaming through the sandhills and bush as a kid - Mom has only ever seen two snakes. Sure you can 'find' them if you go deliberately looking for them but most of the time the snakes sense when something is coming and stay out of the way. So Mom thinks it is kind of funny that she has seen more snakes here in the USA then she ever did back home in Australia. Point being made - look what we saw swimming in MY lake yesterday - yep - a snake. (And no it wasn't a stick - it was definitely a snake and moving fast) It was about 3 foot long (thankfully about 20 feet away from us) but a snake never the less. And look what he was heading for - smorgasbord on a log! We doubt very much the snakes eat the turtles but Mom thought it was funny anyway. We wondered how many more turtles could squeeze themselves onto that log?

  1. Ewww, snakes!!! That's something would make my mom scream her lungs out. We don't see many snakes here but we do encounter monitor lizards on and off. There was one once visited us and made Mom and Sister Rosie scared but excited as well.

The picture with turtles is awesome!

  7. Momz sez the water snakes are the ones that scare her the most...They drop out of trees when she's out in the kayak...I've only seen a few harmless ones around the garden and I leave them well alone...Turtles on a log are fun...But they always dive under when I try to get close

  8. Ick, that us the one thing our mom can't handle! Snakes scare her, and she will not near them.

Did you know that Ireland never had snakes...until recently. People snuck them into the country, as pets, and then either released them of they escaped. Now Ireland has snakes too!

  9. Mom isn't too keen on snakes either, but we seem to keep finding them in our yard. Just harmless ones, but they really freak her out, especially when she sees us trying to play with them:)

  11. SHE has only seen two in the area, too. But SHE's always on the lookout. SHE's afraid we'll run into a snake who hasn't read the books saying they'll slither away and not bother you if you leave them alone!

Of course, we didn't leave one of them alone.

Love the turtles on the log!

  16. I don't know why I don't mind snakes on land, but snakes in the water creeps me out. I think the turtles are sort of "board of turtles" (you know, like a board of directors)....pretty cool!

Tell your Mum thanks for the "Spring" card, we got it today when we picked up the mail from the post office after our trip!

  22. I have never seen a snake. My peep has seen a couple in the wild, two at the family farm (her Grandma shot one!) and one when she was walking home from school. They were all brown snakes!
